Travelling with kids? Animal lovers in tow? Vancouver delivers big on memorable wildlife experiences—without needing to head into the deep backcountry. From playful penguins to cuddly goats, here are the best animal encounters you can plan into your Vancouver itinerary.
1. Vancouver Aquarium (Stanley Park)
This one tops most lists for good reason. Located right in Stanley Park, the Vancouver Aquarium is home to over 65,000 creatures. You’ll find sea otters floating on their backs, jellyfish glowing in dark tanks, and rescued sea lions soaking up the spotlight. It’s indoors, air-conditioned, and full of hands-on exhibits—perfect for a family-friendly afternoon.
Pro tip: Grab lunch at Stanley Park Pavilion or head to Prospect Point afterwards for panoramic views (and ice cream).
2. Maplewood Farm (North Vancouver)
Just across the bridge, Maplewood Farm gives kids a taste of country life—complete with goats, cows, pigs, chickens, and more. It’s an easy half-day trip and very stroller-friendly. Kids can feed rabbits, watch the milking demonstration, or just enjoy the open space.
If you’re already visiting Capilano Suspension Bridge Park, it’s only a 15-minute drive away—pair the two for a full day of forest and farm.
3. Capilano Suspension Bridge Park’s Rainforest Wildlife (North Vancouver)
Speaking of Capilano, it’s not a zoo—but there’s still a surprising amount of wildlife to spot. Eagles soar overhead, salmon spawn in the Capilano River in late summer, and squirrels scamper along the forest floor. Interpretive signage helps visitors (of all ages) identify the flora and fauna throughout the park. Don’t miss the Treetops Adventure for a true birds-eye view of the canopy—no binoculars required.
4. Reifel Bird Sanctuary (Delta)
Looking for something peaceful and off the tourist radar? The George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary is about an hour’s drive from downtown but well worth it. It’s home to over 200 species of birds throughout the year, including sandhill cranes and snow geese. You can buy a bag of bird seed for a few dollars and hand-feed ducks as you walk the trails.
5. Greater Vancouver Zoo (Aldergrove)
This one’s a bit of a trek—about 45 minutes to an hour from the city—but it’s your best bet for seeing big animals like zebras, giraffes, and lions. The Greater Vancouver Zoo offers bike and golf cart rentals, making it surprisingly easy to explore, even with little kids.
6. Southlands Heritage Farm (Vancouver)
Hidden in the city’s southwest corner, Southlands Heritage Farm is a lovely mix of working farm and educational centre. With chickens, ponies, and an on-site market, it’s a quiet place to recharge and enjoy a slower pace. Check their schedule for drop-in hours or seasonal events.
7. Grouse Mountain Wildlife Refuge
At the top of the Skyride gondola, you’ll find two resident grizzly bears living in a protected habitat. Grinder and Coola were orphaned cubs and now live on Grouse Mountain under expert care. You can view them from a distance, hear their story, and learn more about BC’s wild bear population. Bonus: there’s also a lumberjack show and birds of prey demonstration in summer.
